Voices of Change: A Comprehensive Youth Program for Bystander Empowerment and Violence Prevention
Time: 9:00am - 10:00am
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Sarah Thomas (she/her)
Voices of Change is a bystander intervention program developed out of the Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre and Sexual Assault Services Association (AWRCSASA) in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The primary goal of the program is to prevent violence, specifically gender based violence within our communities, by shifting the sole focus from self-protection strategies, towards training bystanders–people who witness potentially dangerous situations–to recognize risky interactions and learn how to safely intervene. The role of the teacher cannot be overstated in this endeavor. We are grateful to have teachers in our schools who strongly believe in fostering healthy, respectful relationships amongst their students. While educational programs can change how people think, youth need greater opportunity to assimilate and practice bystander intervention skills to ensure these changes translate into effective actions in real-life situations. We will discuss ways that you can create a safer and engaging space for your students and give them this opportunity.
